An extender is a product that when added to a water based paint, glaze or medium slows the drying time. This chemical is added in a small amount to most paints and glazes to enable the user to work with the paint and yet have it dry in a reasonable time. If more time is needed for manipulation of a glaze or paint, then adding you own small amount of extender helps keep the paint from drying fast.

Add a small amount to any water based medium that needs more open time.
