Gouache is a painting technique in which pigment is added to watercolors, producing an opaque effect. The white pigment lightens the tone. When using gouache in watercolor, the tiny particles of pigment become enmeshed in the fiber of the paper; in gouache the color lies on the surface of the paper, forming a continuous layer, or coating. Because of the chalkiness of the white pigment gouache paint dries quickly to a matte finish. When applied with bristle brushes it is possible to achieve a slight impasto or texture. With softer brushes, a smoother effect is obtained.
Gouache was originally used by the Egyptians. It was a popular medium with Rococo artists such as François Boucher (1703/70). Modern artists like Georges Rouault and Paul Klee are famous for their gouache paintings. Contemporary painters use gouache in watercolor and as a medium in mixed media.
With Gouache you paint in layers. It is possible to make corrections by painting on top of the previous layers. The light is reflected differently with gouache. Gouache is very pigmented so it is sometimes difficult to achieve dark colors and sometimes lacks depth. But it is a great product that is easy to use with no smelly solvents. Cleans up with soap and water.

Directions for Use:
Mix a small amount of desired Colorant into Acrylic Gouache medium. Apply with brush. Dries quickly. May paint over existing colors. A great water color medium.
